I am a huge Chicago Cubs fan, so it is no surprise where I found the first honorary “Larry.” It was a Marlins/Cubs playoff game at Wrigley Field in 2003. A player from the Marlins hit a foul ball to the third base side. Anybody – man, woman, child, Cubs fan, Marlins fan, you name it – sitting in those seats would have gone for the ball. Almost everyone sitting around him also went for the ball, but Steve Bartman got blamed for it. The media picked up on it and not a summer goes by where you don’t hear a reference to poor Steve Bartman. What a Larry thing to happen. So with great pride, I bestow the first honorary “Larry” designation to Steve “Larry” Bartman. I am not sure if ‘congratulations” are appropriate. I feel for you Steve.
